Reno is pretty close to a bunch of resorts. Mt Rose, Sugarbowl, Donner Ski Ranch, Northstar. You can often get good deals on casino rooms, and Donner Ski Ranch in particular is pretty inexpensive and good for a family to ski together. Sugarbowl just across the road has high speed lifts everywhere. Nothstar is more of a "mega-resort", so expect to pay a high premium for that, but it's also there. I haven't skied Mt Rose, one of the few in the area that I haven't been to, but I know it has a high base area and is popular with locals. They probably have some kind of shuttle service I'd bet for the casinos.
