Default Initial CFI/MEI questions

I currently do not have any sort of CFI. My question is Can I do the MEI first in a complex aircraft and then go back and do my CFI in a fixed gear plane? Sort of like how you can get your ME Comm in a retract and then not have to go back and use a retract for the SE add on.

My reason for this is that I own a C-172 SP. Rather than renting a 172RG to do my CFI I would rather rent a twin and build up the ME time and then go back and use my plane for CFI and CFII.

So can I do it this way? If so are there any pros or cons of doing this. One person said it may be better because there aren't as many things in the ME rating to be tested on at the FAA.
