Default Initial CFI/MEI questions

I currently do not have any sort of CFI. My question is Can I do the MEI first in a complex aircraft and then go back and do my CFI in a fixed gear plane? Sort of like how you can get your ME Comm in a retract and then not have to go back and use a retract for the SE add on.

My reason for this is that I own a C-172 SP. Rather than renting a 172RG to do my CFI I would rather rent a twin and build up the ME time and then go back and use my plane for CFI and CFII.

So can I do it this way? If so are there any pros or cons of doing this. One person said it may be better because there aren't as many things in the ME rating to be tested on at the FAA.

That's exactly how I did it, and for the same reason. I did my MEI as my initial, and then went back and did my CFII and CFI-Single Engine as an add on. Check out the PTS task table for the specifics of what you have to do on each checkride and then for on the add on rides. Doing it this way doesn't necessarily limit information you're responsible for on the oral though....mine was still 8+ hours. And for the things you don't have to do, they're replaced by things you do have to do (or can be asked to do) in the multi (VMC demo, engine shutdowns, etc.) Personally, it was a good way to go for me. If you plan on teaching in a multi, definitely do it. If you aren't planning on teaching in the multi, I might suggest just the single engine for the initial.

Thanks for the reply. For me if I did the CFI in a single retract then went on to do my MEI then I would be renting both planes. If I do my MEI first then I only have to rent the twin and can go back and do the single engine add ons in my plane which isn't a retract. I just wanted to make sure that one took care of the other. I would hate to do the MEI first only to find that I then had to go back in a retract single rather than a fixed gear.

you don't. in fact, that is the way ATP does it. MEI, CFII and then CFI. good luck with the check rides. I had a blast with mine, especially the MEI
