half assed? It's SOP! The 737 starts the APU on the ground and runs it all the way across the pond. That is how it qualifies for ETOPS.

Yup, the APU only needs to be running during the ETOPS portion of the flight, but with start limited to FL250, it is started on the ground and shut down upon coast in (and restarted after landing). ]
