Most organized pilot groups have a contractual "agency shop" clause that mandates that the pilots on the list are required to pay dues. They don't have to be members of the union, but they do pay dues....so why wouldn't you be a member?

Also, remember contracts under the railway labor act don't expire, they are amended. The old contract remains in force, so when a UPS pilot says "they don't have a contract", they really mean a new amended contract. The pay, work rules, and the requirement to pays union dues remains in effect until amended.
