It's sad but I think there will be a lot of people that continue to volunteer while their fellow pilots are on the streets. The union shouldn't have to put out any letter like that, people should know already. Hopefully, people get educated real quick on the right thing to do during a furlough.
This happened at my last airline. Union couldn't say anything about it, as the contract allowed volunteers to pick up open time, but it didn't forbid the practice when others were on furlough. Thus, the union can't argue against something that's perfectly legal. (legal and moral are two entirely different things)
I don't think there's anything wrong with informing the rest of your pilots (on an internal web board) who's helping themselves at the expense of others.
