I would get it now just so you can use it as a repository for some FAA pubs and handbooks . . . you can download them in FF via its Documents Catalog feature and read them at will. Like others said, l would not use it in lieu of learning everything the traditional "paper" way because the iPad will overheat and quit working without proper ventilation so you must have paper backups readily available, as well as know how to file/open/close flight plans in the air with FSS, get enroute weather updates from Flight Watch, etc.
