I would get it now just so you can use it as a repository for some FAA pubs and handbooks . . . you can download them in FF via its Documents Catalog feature and read them at will. Like others said, l would not use it in lieu of learning everything the traditional "paper" way because the iPad will overheat and quit working without proper ventilation so you must have paper backups readily available, as well as know how to file/open/close flight plans in the air with FSS, get enroute weather updates from Flight Watch, etc.

I think an iPad is an excellent tool in addition to traditional methods ! Personally would suggest going for the standard size though as it fits approach plates nicely on the screen and displays POH at a fairly normal size.

I'm conflicted, but honestly it's a great learning tool, download all the "extra's" that are available and you have some great reading at your fingertips. Use it as a back-up to what you are learning on paper. You are absolutely right, you have to learn the basics first before you should move to electronic, but I will say don't plan on being able to use your iPad on your check-ride as a PPL.

Keep an eye on technology, but it all means jack if you don't have the basics to back it up.

Wow! Great feedback - thank you, everyone.

I think I agree with King, Web, MrM, and others about some of the points. It's really important to know how to use something that doesn't rely on batteries and/or an internet connection. I take pride in knowing the "original" methods of doing things and I think being able to use the paper charts, a ruler, and a protractor along with an E6B will be not only a better connection to flight itself (I know, a bit dorky) but also invaluable as a learning tool. I think it helps to have the automated tools but it's nice to know how that tool is doing the calculations. Also, of course, if something stops working I have the knowledge to back myself up with.

Otto, the price thing, I could not agree more about that. I was shopping around on Pilot Mall and noticed the charts, w/o a subscription for an upfront discount would be all of $16 every few months. Well worth it for the area that I'll be flying in to have a section, TAC, and an A/FD.

I should say tho, I already own the iPad Mini. It was a gift and has been an amazing piece of technology which I use often. I'm typing on it now, actually. James, Ewf, I have considered looking in to Apple's refurbished iPad 2's or something for the price to go bigger but I'm not sure if I want to take that step and add more to the costs - especially as a brand new student. I don't think it's something I should worry about yet, but will certainly keep it in mind!

Thanks again for the feedback, it really helps justify that I'm not crazy in my thinking to know I'm not the only one Appreciate it!
