I'm conflicted, but honestly it's a great learning tool, download all the "extra's" that are available and you have some great reading at your fingertips. Use it as a back-up to what you are learning on paper. You are absolutely right, you have to learn the basics first before you should move to electronic, but I will say don't plan on being able to use your iPad on your check-ride as a PPL.
Keep an eye on technology, but it all means jack if you don't have the basics to back it up.
