I always walk up to the gate and check for crew when there's a debacle forming. On more than one occasion after discovering a js requesting pilot we've had to negotiate with the gate agent to put them on. Sucks, but you have to do it in order to take care of each other. Most pilots who have been commuters look out for other commuters.
