this isnt about a matter of "stopping". That isn't the issue. I welcome mechanics to fly. The way this was done was at very low level, and an attempt to circumvent the clear intent of the FAR's. (in my opinion)
Addressing it head on, some frank discussions and leadership, and use of previous federal decisions on this issue, that have been enforced here and at several other airlines would be the direction I would advocate.
My point is the union is addressing this with the FAA at a national level which is really the only way to make the company alter it's procedure.
