No pilot should pay for their ATP. The company you work for (the regionals are a good place to get one) should pay for it. Most regionals are giving them in initial training, and if they're not they will be soon
That is like saying no pilot should pay for their CFI. After all there are schools out there that will pay for it for you. I paid for my high performance endorsement should i have waited and hoped I'd find an employer who would pick up the tab? I'm sure the regionals would have taken care if it back when they were hiring 250 hour wonder pilots. If you have to come out of pocket to better your chances for the next stop then sometimes you have to suck it up.
