Yes. Twenty years of flying TACAMO. VQ-4, VQ-3, Force Warfare Aircraft Test Directorate, Naval Training Support Unit (now VQ-7). Reel operator for the first 3 then flight engineer for the last 17.

Some folks used to call me a crusty flight engineer. Hence the moniker.

How about yourself?

Small world, VQ4 for me too. I wanted to stay on the east coast though so when they went to OK, I left for VA for E-2 DIFCREW orders.

It was probably a good thing that you got out of TACAMO. Wish I did. Twenty years was too much.

Thanks for the advice on the ATP and type rating. Any recommendations for an ATP, multi-engine examiner in the Seattle area?

I'm not sure if he still does them but Skip Mosner (sp?) is a great guy. Very fair, no tricks, non threatening. He was at Galvin for a while, but I heard somewhere he might be doing something else these days. Another DPE is Johnny Summers, he is very nice and fair as well. One thing you have to consider when you take your ATP ride is if the DPE is authorized to give you the ride in the airplane you are training in (Seneca, Seminole, C-310, etc...) I don't know why that is, but I have heard of people having issues with that before.

The best place to get an ATP is the place that will pay for it (ie company upgrade or hire). Besides that ALL ATPs may be able to suit your needs.

You're a CFI/MEI with 6000TT... you should know a local examiner and/or a plane you know inside and out that you instruct in for your ATP. Why go to some strange location/school?

Obviously any company who is going to pay for it is best. If you are looking for an excuse to spend the money go to ALLATPS in Vegas. I went there for CFI school and the examiners are very fair. They are much less likely to bust you for a pay to play program, its not like the guy is giving you the power to teach which at least in my opinion has much more liability. Whoever is giving you the exam knows that in the end when you get hired somewhere you are going to have to go through a ride that would give you an ATP anyway. At least after your done you can spend an extra night in Vegas. Just a question, are you just getting the rating so its easier to get a job?

No pilot should pay for their ATP. The company you work for (the regionals are a good place to get one) should pay for it. Most regionals are giving them in initial training, and if they're not they will be soon

That is like saying no pilot should pay for their CFI. After all there are schools out there that will pay for it for you. I paid for my high performance endorsement should i have waited and hoped I'd find an employer who would pick up the tab? I'm sure the regionals would have taken care if it back when they were hiring 250 hour wonder pilots. If you have to come out of pocket to better your chances for the next stop then sometimes you have to suck it up.
