I just did this on an overnight. The hotel staff was great. They recommended a local eatery that my wife and I enjoyed very much. They also let her stay a couple of extra hours so she didn't have to leave early when I did the next morning.

What helped here was that I was staying in the same hotel the following night. The staff just let me keep the same room both nights. They also let housekeeping know what was going on so they wouldn't disturb my wife.

What was really good was our two teenage daughters didn't kill each other while Mom and Dad were away overnight.
