Well, in the example given, the pilot ISN'T living in base. He simply lives in the outstation that he overnights in. But more importantly, can hold seniority wise.
But sure, easy answer. That's assuming vacancies exist in said other types, right?
As an example, at UPS, that would have meant being on the 727 (assuming you could hold it), till it went away. Then being on the DC-8 (assuming you could hold it), till it went away. Then maybe the 75/76 (assuming you could hold it) and NOT being displaced to ANC or possibly ONT.
See what I'm getting at? For every guy "living the life" with ALL his overnights at home insert whatever 2,3, or 4 figure amount of pilots industry wide that aren't able to.

I just did this on an overnight. The hotel staff was great. They recommended a local eatery that my wife and I enjoyed very much. They also let her stay a couple of extra hours so she didn't have to leave early when I did the next morning.
Your contract rooms reserved by the airline have a different check out time?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
What helped here was that I was staying in the same hotel the following night. The staff just let me keep the same room both nights. They also let housekeeping know what was going on so they wouldn't disturb my wife.
What was really good was our two teenage daughters didn't kill each other while Mom and Dad were away overnight.

If you're PIC on a Cessna 560 you shouldn't have any issue getting hired by the regional of your choice.
As others have stated, getting an overnight in your hometown shouldn't be an issue...it's just a matter if the trips are on lines that bid high...if it's just a "typical" overnight, i'm sure no one is really going to care or be trying to GET your line...When i was bidding, I typically just looked for specific days off, weekends off, or max days off...commutable lines can be very important as well, this will be true for you and anyone else who has to commute to work.
Could turn out that the lines that overnight at home aren't commutable for you...if that turned out to be the case, you might gain an extra night at home, but you could lose a day at home on either end of hte trip commuting to and from your domicile...
I'd just find the airline you want to be at, and go for it...the rest is a crapshoot.

In addtion to overnights at home you also can look forward to spending many many tedious hours a day trapped in a small room listening to guys like this going on and on and on about whatever it is that bugs them. Thank goodness they're the exception.

haha, the exception...if pilots didn't complain, the only time they'd speak is when they're communicating with ATC.

Had an overnight at home on Christmas Eve. Was flying with a CKA. He told me to be first off the plane, get home and be back before the door closed on Christmas Day. There is no reason why you shouldn't go home if/whenever you can on an overnight.
