Nothing wrong with it. Im doing it tonight in fact. We have no buy back program that Im aware of. The rooms are prepaid by the month I believe, so they will pay for the room whether I stay there or not.

Like others said seniority not really involved unless it's a great layover destination. You assume others want to layover in your hometown.

Default The other side of that coin...

...is you might have a great layover hotel in the city you commute from. Your wife/husband meets you there if the children are old enough to stay home by themselves or you arrange a sitter.

I just did this on an overnight. The hotel staff was great. They recommended a local eatery that my wife and I enjoyed very much. They also let her stay a couple of extra hours so she didn't have to leave early when I did the next morning.

Your contract rooms reserved by the airline have a different check out time?

At SkyWest at some of our hotels that have a high occupancy of crews were supposed to be out of our room at the scheduled van time. This is because they need to get the rooms ready for the next crews that are coming in. If your delayed you keep the room though.

Interesting. In a former life many years ago I worked as a van driver/front desk person at the Sheraton where the SouthWest crews stayed and there were no special restrictions on departure times.
Checkout time was 1100 if I remember and there were no crews coming in for the night until much later in the afternoon. Our housekeeping staff hadn't even come in as early as some of those crews left. I hated the early mornings! I probably wouldn't do well with those early morning departures; the few I fly now drain me, I'd much rather fly later into the night.

A couple things to consider;

One has been mentioned, the overnight and city pair can get handed over to another carrier.

The schedules change ALL the time. The overnight may be a min rest overnight (gonna change soon). If you're a lineholder, and the trip that contains the overnight is non-commutable (especially on BOTH ends), you're now getting one night at home but possibly giving up 2 nights to get it. And very likely one night to get it if the trip isn't one end commutable.

As long as you're out of domicile, yes.

I've run into FedEx, UPS, and ABX pilots that were able to do this.

And it works great, till the company decides to change which planes now go where. And now the fleet one is on ISN'T the fleet now serving that city.

Or instead of it being a simple 2 leg out and back, it now turns into a 4 legger with possible sort sit somewhere.
