It used to be they would list you in Biz class, so if there is an open seat in biz they have no problems giving it to you. But first was off limits unless were a UAL employee or flying with one (sponsor)

I just wanted to add my two cents. I've jumpseated internationally a few times since the merger. It looks like we are no longer listed in J, only Y. Although I can't comment as to whether the gate will give you a seat in J if that is all that is available, it seems like that won't be much of a problem. In my experience, even though Y will start out oversold, paying passengers will upgrade, opening seats in Y.
