It used to be they would list you in Biz class, so if there is an open seat in biz they have no problems giving it to you. But first was off limits unless were a UAL employee or flying with one (sponsor)
But not sure if thats still the case with the CAL merger.

I just wanted to add my two cents. I've jumpseated internationally a few times since the merger. It looks like we are no longer listed in J, only Y. Although I can't comment as to whether the gate will give you a seat in J if that is all that is available, it seems like that won't be much of a problem. In my experience, even though Y will start out oversold, paying passengers will upgrade, opening seats in Y.

Dont ever go by the seat map.
Alot of pax buy tickets but dont choose a seat till the day of departure.
That suxs that UA wont put j/s in first.
Even getting a biz class upgrade as a 1K on a revenue ticket has been difficult for me.

^^^^. That's the problem. When we fly back from international destinations we rarely see the passengers until they board and don't have contact with the gate agents until they come down because we get dropped off at the airplane. So we'll never really know if we have jump seaters up there

Yeah, I KNOW it's the CA's airplane. But I've seen it happen, as well as had it happen to me on domestic legs. I really DON'T care where I sit, I just wanna get there. But I have had a CA ask the lead if I could sit in first and he got a very terse "NO", more than once. And YES, I walk on the airplane, and introduce myself to EVERYBODY on my way to cockpit, mentioning that I'm trying to JS, and ask for permission to head to the cockpit, etc. I don't just walk past/ignore the FA's. Like I see other people do.
I've NEVER had a problem on an int'l JS getting the best seat available. But the point STILL stands, it can depend on the CA, the airline, and the airline's cockpit/cabin crew culture.
