It's so silly that us/aa had to give up these slots. They ended up proving their point that small cities would lose service with the loss of these slots. They'll end up giving them to LCCs that will end up using them to add more flights to florida.
Who cares if 50 people can't get on their CRJ from nowhere. US-AA wasn't flying many of those small cities because they were noble or because they were particularly profitable, they did it because they didn't have any other big cities they wanted to fly to and MORE importantly they wanted to keep that slot from being used by the competition. If the airport wasn't slot controlled in the first place, I am quite certain many of those small cities wouldn't be served anyway.
