For me personally, I like it. 50 more people angered at USAir/American and willing to fly Delta instead.

More info on the slots. They will be bundled in 4 groups. 14/14/12/4 pairs. Also "American will divest five gates – gates 24, 26, 28, 30 and 32 – on the centre pier at Washington National, according to her presentation."

Only US carriers are allowed to bid.

I wonder if there is a rule preventing one airline from winning the bids for all/most of the slots.

Yes, its called the government simply forces whoever they deem to have excessive amounts to gift them to whoever they politically feel will benefit them. Sometimes they give the party being unilaterally expropriated the fake chance to auction the slots off, but its mostly a predetermined charade. Kind of like when your brother starts it and you're still mad at him but mom makes you appologize. Everyone knows you're #sorrynotsorry but its just a script that has to be followed.

OK. That's a cute tirade. Maybe you should move to a country that encourages a monopoly on scarce resources or doesn't allow the population to vote in politicians that don't strictly follow your ideology.

It's so silly that us/aa had to give up these slots. They ended up proving their point that small cities would lose service with the loss of these slots. They'll end up giving them to LCCs that will end up using them to add more flights to florida.

Who cares if 50 people can't get on their CRJ from nowhere. US-AA wasn't flying many of those small cities because they were noble or because they were particularly profitable, they did it because they didn't have any other big cities they wanted to fly to and MORE importantly they wanted to keep that slot from being used by the competition. If the airport wasn't slot controlled in the first place, I am quite certain many of those small cities wouldn't be served anyway.

Ah, so the saviour LCC's are partnering with patriots of democracy and insuring that air travel remains of the people. By the people. And for the people.

Dear baby Jesus sitting in his crib watching baby Einstein videos learning about shapes and colors, that's an awesome way to look at all this.
