That's surprising. I think that kind of control is difficult without jail breaking the iPad and buying some expensive software. If other airlines are anything like Mesa, that's a tall order. Our computers must comprise the entirety of IE7 traffic on the internet.
American Airlines is nothing like Mesa Airlines. I can see them protecting their image if an accident occured or one was lost or stolen with that being company property. I see your point though, I'm not a computer engineer, but sounds like a tall order.
