Another solution in contrast to the 12 to 20 year pay scale system in the industry is to shorten it to 2 years. The second year you max out as a Captain or a First Officer. The system is front loaded to top out the pay for operating the equipment regardless of years of service. Pay increases come from either an upgrade or a transition to a larger aircraft. In this system seniority counts where it matters like choosing which line you want to fly, vacation, aircraft type, etc. but the compensation is the same for doing the same job!
