I would like to correct part of your statement.

You can collect your long term sick after being away for 7 consecutive days but your PTO does NOT have to be zero. Only the sick portion of the PTO must be zeroed out.

We have no way to view the sick portion accrual vs the vacation part but our pay auditors can and do. And it's not terribly difficult for us to figure it out. So you can be out for at least 7 consecutive days, take the sick portion of the PTO to zero and start collecting out of the long term sick while still keeping a substantial amount of PTO time left due to the vacation part that was put in there January. They will not do this for you of course, therefore you need to contact your pay comp auditor and request them to "freeze" your PTO once your sick portion of PTO would be zero to start taking from your long term bank.

By doing this you're saving the vacation part of the PTO for later use but still using the long term sick.
