Actually, no not really. Money has always been a poor motivator when you're talking big picture stuff.
I'd be lying if I said I wasn't anticipating that 2016 raise, but I worked just as hard and cared just as much for the operation when I was a commuter F/O. I'd bet a lot of us could say that.
Money matters. Not in how good of a job I do, but definitely in terms of how much I work. For example, on first year pay, I'm not ever trying to pick up extra trips. It's just not worth it at $40 per hour. Similarly, if I am ever fortunate enough to make $250k or more a year, I'm not going to pick up extra trips when The government is taking 40 cents on the dollar or whatever the government is taking from me at that time (probably over 50 by then). Rather, I'll fly as little as possible and focus on QOL. In between those two stages of life, I'll work my butt off.
