Only a management stooge could believe the FAA protects pilots. They're more of a problem then a solution and have been known to blow off the NTSB on their recommendations. Sorry, but the only safety net for pilots and thus the travelling public left are pilot unions, more specifically contractual protections that limit what airline executives can do. Sadly though, they've become businesses in themselves and have relinquished their effectiveness.

That is probably the biggest reason this profession's situation is what it is and among the fundamental reasons young people avoid this profession. If unions were suddenly abolished in this industry, I'll bet such a large percentage would leave it in such short order, the industry would collapse.
