Back in 1991 or so after the merger with Tigers, there was only the 727, DC-8, DC-10s to commute on from most of the major cities. There were about a dozen guys that commuted with their own small planes. Three or four from Atlanta. One from Birmingham. Several from the Dallas area. One from Nashville, and some from the Chicago area. During those days AMR had two facilities. AMR north and AMR south. AMR north is were Fedex's corporate hangers are now days. AMR north had an extra ramp space they never used and as long as we parked there and bought gas from them they would not charge us a tie down fee. It would be nice if Fedex would allow us to park over in the maintenance hanger section. If they could do an annual too that would be awesome. Seriously, at one point Fedex could have bought Delta for less than they paid for Tigers and operate it as a wholly owned subsidiary. One more reason future pilots will choose United, Delta, AMR, or SWA over Fedex. The ability to get to work.
With all the eclectic home builts and Cessnas (Cee 1-8-2 for you military folks) one might ask if MEM was having a fly in. The response would be "nah, it's just Monday."
