flaps had a pretty good explanation for this a while ago. Later I found it in the contract and it says about the same thing.

2) Golden days are "inviolate" meaning they can't (or aren't supposed to) JRA/junior assign you or schedule anything on those days. For example, let's say you have a wedding on the 10th of a month, and you work the 5th-9th. Let's say there's a meltdown/snowstorm and they're junior assigning an overnight that'd take you into the 10th (your day off). Per contract, they're supposed to go from the most junior available pilot up the list in inverese seniority order when trying to pin the JRA on someone. If you bid and were awarded a golden day on the 10th, they have to skip you and keep going up the list.
I never bid golden days on reserve b/c I was living out of a suitcase/hotel, and I actually wanted them to junior assign me for the $$$ and the comp day off later in the month. And it also messed with my ability to rapidly swap around reserve days as the numbers in flica shifted, since you can't swap into a GLD/golden day unless you call crew line and have it removed.
Anyways hope that clarifies things a bit. You can always just scan your contract pdf for "golden day" it's defined in there fairly well.
I wonder if they still contractually reserve the right to junior assign you if there's literally nobody else. But it probably almost never comes up.
