I thought it was common sense that one should gain adequate experience before moving over to the left seat. Apparently not. 1000 hours PIC in type is barely enough time. Not sure who it was, but someone was talking about flying in winter conditions and the challenges faced. Looking back at the "goat-ropes" in winter ops I've experienced, most of it was simply getting off the gate, getting to the pad, etc. Once airborne there's no difference than a CAVOK day. We can bat around adverse situations all day long, and sure more experience is best, but 99.9% of the time if you follow procedure you'll come out just fine. This would require a good training department and standards, and I can't think of a 121 carrier that doesn't have that.
