Shyguy, the other benefits to the two-door system are no need for the silly drink-cart barricade that the FA's do on some flights when the single door is opened, or the "vulnerable period" where the one guy leaves and the FA is entering, etc. When outer door locked inner door can be always bypassed preventing lockout. I'm not necessarily a fan, but I do see the possible logic.
No it didn't work. The door was compromised easily (flimsy back then) and hijackings occurred frequently.

The only difference was before 9/11, planes were not used to fly into buildings by hijackers.
