I fly for SWA. Our union did nothing contractually to be more restrictive than FAR 117. It has been said that when your flying limits are equal to the actual FARs, then your union has failed to do its job.
We have many days of greater than 8 hours block. Duty limits are close to the FAR max. Yes we get the required rest, but personally the long long days are the fatiguing factor. Not the overnight. Probably a different concern when on long international flights.
I have spoken to numerous other airline pilots and to a man they all said 117 was more tiring than the previous rule. And keeping track of specific hours vs. 30/7 and 1000/12 is much more nebulous.
