FAR 117 fatigue
#11
I fly for SWA. Our union did nothing contractually to be more restrictive than FAR 117. It has been said that when your flying limits are equal to the actual FARs, then your union has failed to do its job.
We have many days of greater than 8 hours block. Duty limits are close to the FAR max. Yes we get the required rest, but personally the long long days are the fatiguing factor. Not the overnight. Probably a different concern when on long international flights.
I have spoken to numerous other airline pilots and to a man they all said 117 was more tiring than the previous rule. And keeping track of specific hours vs. 30/7 and 1000/12 is much more nebulous.

I think you answered your own question. It isn't Part 117 that is more tiring it's that you are now working to the FAR limits wheras before you were not.
I was working to the definition of the FARs before and now during Part 117 and the new rules IMO are way better than before. The only drawback is no more 30/7 limits, but then again some commuters prefer that.
