And am I correct in assuming you can drop trips into open time for reduction in pay, which can be made up with pickups in other spots?

And how realistic is this after 6 months to a year?
The max 6 days on is a result of the 168hr look back where you must have 30 hrs of rest. But in general to cause the 12 day conflict, the end of the month must be 6 days on, then you have to bid and be awarded 6 days on at the beginning of the month.

Then during transition, they must remove 6 days worth of flying from your schedule and pay protect you because crew planning is not allowed to remove flying from the middle (contractual). The contract requires that they remove flying from the ends. So if you have a block of 12 days of reserve, 6 days of reserve get removed somewhere.

They also must remove you from flying if you are scheduled for more than 29hrs in 7 days (contractual not FAR)

As far as 3 stints of 12 days of reserve flying in a row, not likely, the situation comes up as a result of bidding a line that has a block of 6 days of flying at the end of one month or jockeying with your schedule to get six days of flying added or swapped into your schedule from open time at the end of the month before next month's bid closes, and then bidding for a block of 6 days of flying at the beginning of the next month.

I had a nice JM today - I'm sure there are other pilots that have done better than what I did today. I got called for a JM this morning. 7:30 flying - so at 200% credits 15:00. It caused a 29/7 conflict with my next 4 day, so scheduling removed me from the 4 day and pay protected 23:15 the trip was worth, so for one day of work, I got paid 38:15 and got 3 extra days off for my trouble.
