So, say what you will, and I am still a probie (for 2 months!), but the pax love the PAs. I think the folks who have been in this industry for (probably) too long have forgotten what it's like to take your first airplane flight, or how doing simple PAs like I mentioned really add to the experience for most passengers. Flying an airplane is really cool, and so is flying in it for a lot of folks. I understand the jaded business traveller might not feel the same, but they are probably in first class with headphones on and a free drink in their hand by the time announcements are made.
Personally, I think the percentage who don't like them is WAY smaller than those that do, just my newbie observations.
Cricket, have you ever seen the generic airline Flight Attendant PA guide? Goes like this.

PA 13: [After door shut] Begin pre Safety Briefing PA

PA 15: [After FO says sit down] Make a PA repeating what the FO says.
PA 16: [After landing gear retracts] Begin welcome aboard/now that we're on our way PA. Single out frequent fliers and tell them how wonderful they are and tell others that haven't joined that if they do join they will now get a PA after takeoff telling them how wonderful they are.
PA 17: [After passing 10,000'] Begin explanation of drinks and snacks that will be available on flight. And repeat benefits of credit card.

PA 23: After pilot makes PA that descent has begun, make a PA to reiterate what pilot said.
PA 24: Make in range PA, tell people that their internet service is about to be cut off because you are on final approach.

So if you're the first class passenger that got on first because you are a part of the 20% that provides 80% of revenue, you had to endure all of that.
Now imagine the pilot wants to join in the fun with a in cabin meet and greet, an in cabin facing the passenger PA, a long before takeoff PA, 2 en route PAs, a scenic tour of the country PA but please ignore that in doing so you shut off their in flight entertainment/movie/moving map that told them where they were. Then a in range PA.
