My experience with Hotel Standbys has been the opposite. The longest I've spent in the hotel is a couple of hours. In one case I got to my room, sat on the bed, called the scheduler to give him my room number, and he had an assignment already. That resulted in an odd look from the front desk clerk.

You can definitely do it without a car, and I would recommend it. You can volunteer to drive yourself, but you'll also be assuming responsibility and liability for anything that happens along the way, and for however long it takes you to get to the hub. I drive to the hotel (I live in domicile), but let The Company arrange the transportation when I'm called to go fly.
