You're leaving out a little information. You need to know your true airspeed (a whole other topic in itself) in order to find the wind correction and work the problem.

And I agree it's important to know how to do this. 'The real world' also involves flying little Cessnas and Pipers for a lot of people, and these airplanes don't have a lot of redundancies.
