However the cities west of Chicago, like Naperville, Batavia, {Yorkville & Oswego are really family friendly safe newer affordable communities}, Planefield, Joliet are all pretty safe areas in Chicagoland. They are "west" of midway and traffic coming from there to midway is not as bad as from Indiana or Michigan.
I grew up in Naperville and its a great town to raise kids in. The schools are great and the area is very safe. When I visit my parents I usually fly into MDW and the drive isn't too bad from the airport.
