Affirmative action is total crap...it perpuates a divisive environment between those who earned it and those who got it anyway. It is ludicrious to expect that the earners will have no resentment towards the non-earners.

The root causes need to be addressed, not the symptoms.

I think the root cause was addressed for my generation...I learned in grade school about the negative aspects of racism, and have always treated people as individuals. This was in the 1970's, in the south too.
