Pre cell phone days with a stupid beeper always on you and 15 minutes to call CRS when the thing went off in the grocery store, movie, driving down the road. If memory serves me, it took the FAA to fix that heinous reserve system. Things can always be improved but wow, we were really at the end of the whip back then.
