While I agree for the most part with this critique, what should the new hire say when accomplishing a task in line with what was taught in training? Is that not the goal of training? Give a baseline for getting the job done? Sure we all create our own little nuances for getting the job done withing the SOP, but that takes time. My standard when new in a plane is to let the Capt (or FO) know. Then when doing something and the other pilot asks what I am doing is to let them know that this is how I was taught, but welcome any advice for better/more efficient/safer/etc ways to do things. What should I be saying?
