Decided to look around. 44k with obligation to buy own tickets on the days when a jumpseat doesn't work, and the hassle of two sectors to base even if jumpseat does work, then hotels or crashpad at base,,, it's impossible. Factor 20 days a month away from the family in. In fact,,, it's an embarrassment that I would be ashamed to tell anyone at a party that I am even attempting.
For the pilots who live near bases it might be a cool niche arrangement. Nothing against anyone who is making it work. Best of luck.
$3700/mo - tax = $2900. $2900 - $800(round trip fare from home once a month)= $2100. Take hotels or crashpad, taxis at base from that and there is very little to live on. Even the whole $2100, or $2900 a month in the pocket is quite low.
