The conventional wisdom behind a CVG base would be that it is a big mx base and we overnight a bunch of airplanes there for overnight work. In order to get those A/C back in revenue service ASAP, we also overnight a lot of crews in CVG. At one point I heard a number as high as 80 hotel rooms per night (~20 crews). Not sure how accurate that is but in theory a base there would reduce (not eliminate) hotel expenses there. All of our legacy blood lines have utilized this strategy at one time but it should be noted that none of those bases persist.
On a related note, unless you don't mind commuting, history suggests it would be ill advised to buy a house at a brand new base.
Ah didn't know we had MX there. I had an overnight in CVG on my last 4 day, didn't know how common they were. Man, place seems like a ghost town compared to a decade ago.
