I certainly see the need to lobby with all that is going on with the foreign carriers and I give to the PAC myself however I did have one problem with the way it was shoved down our throats in Indoc. It basically came across as you all better give or we'll know who didn't and we'll talk to you about it. One person did not elect to give any money as their significant other already does and they were pulled aside and questioned as to why. That left a bad impression of intimidation for those who came from non union operators. It shouldn't have felt like that.
Don't over think it. ALPA volunteers have one shot to visit with and lobby new hires and would love to get feedback and debrief if there's a problem. The new hire classes have been phenomenal during the last few years with most at 100% participation. That participation rate should be a point of pride with new hires and reps alike and speaks to the recognition that company pays pilots, ALPA fills in the amount.
