American wants to protect their regional feed as long as possible. The only way that works assuming they do not cancel the flow agreements is to make anyone, and I'm talking military too, go through their regional partners for a few years and flow up.
They also need to hire a lot of people because of all the retirements they have coming. If they do so exclusively from their subsidiary carriers, they will cannibalize those carriers and the cheap feed that they apparently love. There will still be opportunity for people to get hired outside of the subsidiaries.
