Just how bad could it "slow his progression"? I failed my first 135 checkride too (fiddling with the GPS on ILS approach). They never did train us in the proper use of the GPS (it was assumed we knew how already), and for this the POI slammed the training department a little. I got the practice I needed, then passed on my second try.
But I'm just starting at a regional... so in 4-6 years when I apply to a major, hoping that they might be feeling the shortage a little worse by then, just what should I expect?
