DAL could possibly transfer some of our flying to another base. Even if the SLC flying is protected, DAL could have simply offered to trade X amount of SLC flying for X+15% flying in ATL...
I think DAL's motive here is diversification in the event of a strike (unlikely at SKW in the near future, but maybe they are concerned about the alpa thing). I think they are doing this throughout their system.
