Be careful what you wish for if you want to decouple pay from weight/speed/productivity/new technology. And while many younger guys accuse the old heads of "pulling up the ladder" this issue is something that COULD greatly affect the younger crowd. What happens if a supersonic or faster aircraft comes along or an efficient very large jet comes along? Still want a 717 pilot to be paid the same as the pilot on one of these new jets?
Personally? I wouldn't care as long as both jobs paid well. I don't have heartburn with longevity pay, although I don't think it's realistic or practical to transition to that system more quickly than perhaps a decade. I don't know what my brain and body are going to be up for when I'm 60, but it doesn't sound like aging men generally dig the body clock shifts. The idea of having the option to make my money (the same money) cossing time zones OR flying 1-days and sleeping in my own bed every night sounds pretty good. If that's what seniority looks like down the road, okay.
