I'm not sure what the problem is. In 20 years here, even if we had verification (no matter the form) I would never once have had to do it. If I had, so F'ing what? Am I going to turn down a six figure pay increase with no noticeable concessions or impact to my day to day life, whether at work or home, because once or twice in a 30+ year career I MIGHT have to get a doctor's note? (no matter how silly that might be in the first place).
And you can call in sick a'plenty without verification, and you know it. There is this thing called a threshold you know. Reading your post you would think that the first time a guy ever called in sick he would be getting notes.
