Interesting. All my trips this month and last month are back end commutable and one is front end commutable too. 2 hotels this month three next. 16 off both months. Outstation base. Easy commute from my home via 5 daily nonstops on two different airlines. It's not as bad here as some bitter people would have you believe.
My 4.5 years of experience commuting to an outstation was exactly the opposite of yours. In all of those years, I was able to commute to/from home on the beginning or end of a trip maybe five or six times. There is little more miserable than beginning your trip AND your days off with only a few hours of sleep as the result of commuting on your day off on both ends...all this despite my living in a major hub for both AA and SWA.
Hell, I rarely saw my base during daylight hours because of RAH's crappy outstation schedules.
I think that your experience is the exception.
