Seems like any sort of ethical person would announce a maintenance issue instead and disregard captains request to blatantly lie?

Thanks in advance for any pointers
I got asked that question on my interview. They are looking for a response that shows you are a good problem solver. While we do want to tell the passengers the truth you don't want to create potential conflicts with the Captain. I've been in situations where we had a mechanical issue and the weather was so bad that everyone else was delayed. At that point it is very easy to blame the weather if the mechanical problem will be fixed before the weather delay is lifted. Be honest with the passengers and be honest with the Captain.

You can also get a question like "You arrive at the aircraft to find the Captain smelling of alcohol and exhibiting signs of being drunk. What do you do?" Same type of thought exercise. Obviously you want to have the CA removed but do you want to ruin the guys life? Best response in that situation is to tell the CA he should call in sick and if he refuses then you can call your chief pilot or base manager to bring in additional firepower. Calling the police is a last resort.

In short: be a team player, looking out for your crew, and do your best to problem solve. 90% of the interview they are trying to figure out if you are an easy going, fun to fly with, pilot.
