Actually it's a hell of a union negotiated contractual benefit.
A big chunk of the rest of the industry doesn't get such discretion when it comes to getting to work---or at least I didn't get such benefits when working at my previous non-union carriers as the first missed trip was the bottom rung of the disciplinary chain.
While this was a "policy" the entire time I have been here, it was a huge "get" to have it codified in the contract (21-P) in the last negotiation
